Episode 68: KICKING OFF WOMEN’S MONTH!

With Serial Entrepreneur Shanéy Vijendranath

There is so much to say about Women’s Month. The history behind it, the current plight of women in our country and the many unresolved issues still plaguing South Africa. Without ignoring these issues (rather, in trying to lend voice to them), we are dedicating the month of August to women in our communities who are making tracks, blazing trails and setting an example for all of us to follow when it comes to making a difference.

Right now, we’re all about solutions. For TGE, this means EDUCATION, EMPOWERMENT and UPLIFTMENT. And so it is with absolute pride that we’re kicking off Women’s Month with Shaney Vijendranath – a gentle giant of a voice in our community who is always looking to unify and uplift South African women through multiple startups and initiatives that leave us wondering how this mom of three ever gets any sleep.

Shan’s the founder of You Baby and I, the brains behind MomSays, a Forbes Top 30 Under 30 recipient, a chapter lead for SoGal Johannesburg, a fellow podcaster and SO MUCH MORE. Tune in to hear all about her journey as a mother and entrepreneur and where she intends to launch from here. Like us, you’ll feed off this inspiring woman’s energy to go out and do better in this world.

Episode 67: UNPOPULAR OPINIONS! PLUS Roundafire App Creator Kgosi Kgosi Talks Literacy In SA

PLUS Roundafire App Creator Kgosi Kgosi Talks Literacy in SA

WE’VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY, AND YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT:

Flat-nosed dogs are disgusting.

Harry Potter is overrated.

Musical theatre is fucking annoying.

Brown cars belong in this world.

Poetry is a bunch of pseudo-intellectual hooey.

And pineapple always belongs on pizza.

Have we got you hovering over that unfollow button? Don’t do it! We’ve got so much more where that came from. This week on The Great Equalizer, we’re chatting Unpopular Opinions. You may (or may not) be surprised to hear that Sam and Charlene have some strong opinions about nonsense. What are some of yours? BUT ALSO… We’re talking literacy in South Africa with Roundafire app founder Kgosi Kgosi. This social entrepreneur is hitting all the right notes and doing such great things for a part of our educational economy that is sorely lacking. Tune in to find out how Kgosi and his crew of literacy warriors are breaking boundaries in South African education and literature.

Episode 66: THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT!

With Educational Psychologist Zaakirah Mohamed

This week on The Great Equalizer… Can you ever just be ‘whelmed’? Guys, there have been some important discussions on the boil over the past month (and important ones at that). The fight for representation and diversity in our inherently racist society has been top order over on the ‘Gram, while gender-based violence pervades our news, as does Covid-19 and the unavoidable surge in infections and deaths. The best part of it all? While we’re tackling some seriously hardcore issues head-on, we’re still all navigating the choppy waters of parenting. Easy gig, hmmm? And for many of us, the back-to-school debate continues, as does our anxiety about our children’s wellbeing. And that’s why, in this episode, we welcome onto the show Joburg-based educational psychologist Zaakirah Mohamed, who answers the one question we’ve all been asking ourselves: “Will the kids be alright?” Zaakirah, a mom herself to one teenager and two preschoolers, chats about the mental wellbeing of children going back to school, as well as the mental wellbeing of children staying home during the pandemic.

So, if you’re wondering how going back to school is going to affect your child mentally… TUNE IN TO THIS EPISODE.

Similarly, if you’re wondering whether or not your child will cope mentally and emotionally if he/she stays home for the foreseeable future… TUNE IN TO THIS EPISODE.

Here are some of the resources discussed in the episode:

‘My Hero Is You’, published by Unicef, is aimed at helping young children understand and cope with Covid-19.

Educational psychologist Naomi Holdt has some amazing content to peruse if you're a parent navigating Covid anxiety.

And new publisher Strong Anchor has published two books to guide children in this new normal, Monster in my Neighbourhood and Monster in my School.

Episode 65: BACK TO SCHOOL?

Here’s What We’re Doing and Why

This week on The Great Equalizer… It’s back to reality for restaurants, hairdressers and beauty salons, but is it back to school for the kiddos? In this episode the TGE ladies discuss whether we’ve decided to send our children back to school (depending on when ECD centres will be up and running again), or whether they’ll be home for the foreseeable future. We discuss our fears around contracting Coronavirus versus keeping our kids home like hermits (for what already feels like an eternity). PLUS… Sam wonders if she’s being too careful and Charlene has hit The Mother Load (but not in a good way).

Episode 64: CHECK YO’SELF B4 U WRECK YO’SELF

The White Moms’ Introduction to Anti-Racism

On this episode of The Great Equalizer...

We listen.

We internalise

We check.

We correct.

We move forward.

Many thanks to Terence Mentor (AKA AfroDaddy) for coming on and having the patience to guide these two lily white lasses.

This one is especially for other white parents looking to do better as an ally. To all our loyal listeners, let us know whenever we step a foot wrong. There is no shortage of learning in this #nojudgies journey.

Episode 63: ABOUT TO CRACK?

Us Too, Don’t Worry

The latest TGE episode is up (YAY!) and even though it was recorded just one week into Lockdown 1.0 – before the extension and before Oom Cyril gave us all a good giggle with his infamous mask fumble – we’re still feeling all the feels and nothing is quite as it should be (still). We’re living through – nay, PARENTING through – an unprecedented global crisis and the uncertainty surrounding the status quo has evoked all the fear, anxiety and helplessness we felt when our firstborns were first brought to our bosom (poetic, huh?). But for reals. So at the risk of being ever the Debbie Downers (cuz God knows we’ve been a lot less chirpy over the last couple of months), we decided to touch base with some other moms to see how they’re feeling. In this episode we bring on board the eternally delightful Angie Batis-Durrant (Miss Lucky Pony), who chats to us about one of her darker lockdown days; new mom-of-two Chloe O'Doherty (Misses Chloe), who gives us some insight into giving birth in the time of Corona; and the wisest of us all, clinical psychologist Carly Abramowitz (Carly’s Couch), who gives us some tools to deal with the ongoing shitshow. Our hopes for this episode are that moms feeling depressed or weighted with responsibility feel seen and acknowledged. That pregnant moms who are due to give birth during a time that feels nothing short of apocalyptic know what rockstars they are. And that you, our listeners, give yourselves permission to feel what you need to feel and that you remember to celebrate the small victories. Did you keep the brood alive this past month? We see you. We salute you. You’re doing a good job 🖤

Episode 62: CONSUMING MEDIA IN THE TIME OF CORONA!

With Parenty Editor Farrah Saville

Hey Motherlovers! Two episodes, one week. How lucky are you!? So lucky that, if you're a local listener, you've got another 21 days to catch up on all things TGE :-D #hellolockdownextension Sorry, too soon? In this latest episode of The Great Equalizer we get down and dirty with Parenty editor Farrah Saville about media consumption in the time of corona.

You've probably heard it all, right? Kooky right-wingers preaching the end of the world as we know it; "reputable" virologists spewing fake news in an "uber profesh" 15-minute voice note; a dude with an earbud shoved up his nose spouting his opinion as the gospel... And let's not forget to mention how many times we've considered exiting overactive family WhatsApp groups. It's all been a bit much...

So how do we navigate the noise without switching off from life online altogether? And, probably more importantly, if you've got kids who are old enough to consume media, what's the best way to approach these murky waters? Tune in to get some sage advice from a seasoned media professional.

Episode 61: GETTING TO KNOW YOU!

With AfroDaddy Himself, Terence Mentor

This week on The Great Equalizer, the C-word is off limits. Yep, you heard it here first. Oh wait, did you think we meant... No, no, that one's still cool. I mean it's foul, but it's relevant sometimes. What we're talking about is the other C-word: Think COVID, Corona, anything lockdown-related or to do with quarantine... Blegh. GET OUTTA HERE. We're not touching it. In fact, there were penalties on this show for all who uttered that blasted other C-word. So for everyone who wants a strict departure from the status quo, hop on board because we're getting to know each other again on this episode. The TGE gals each reveal ten things most people don't know about us AND THEN we chat to AfroDaddy himself, Terence Mentor, and ask him some quickfire questions on the fly so we can get to know him a little better. Let's put it this way, T-man may or may not be a Trump apologist. You're gonna have to tune in to see if this could, in fact, be so. Guys, this episode is a ball of fun comprising one whole hour that you don't need to deal with fake news, death tolls or bored children. Ya keen? So lock yourself in the bathroom STAT and #listentothelatest.

Episode 60: SURVIVING SELF-ISOLATION!

Because We Can And We Will

DO THE NEXT RIGHT THING! Now there’s a little Disney wisdom for ya’ll on this fine Monday. Guys, we don’t really know what the future holds and it’s just not lekker. By tonight (at least) we’ll know if we’re in lockdown or a State of Emergency, but beyond that… Well it’s a smorgasbord of doubt and worry here at TGE. Like many of you, we’re wondering where our next pay check is coming from, if we’re going to afford rent next month, whether we’ll be able to pay employees, how we’re going combat crippling anxiety or douse the depression that’s been creeping up on us (without it affecting our children). We’re also wondering how much crafty shit we can do with before our sanity takes a dip in the deep end. Look, there’s no doubt that the current situation is scary AF, so this week we’re doing the only thing we can. We’re taking one step at a time and just DOING THE NEXT RIGHT THING (Frozen style) In Episode 60: SURVIVING SELF-ISOLATION (because we can, and we will), we chat about what we’ve been doing to stay sane in this time of adjustment. We debate free range parenting versus structure and routine and we share what we’ve done to keep our broods busy over the last week (long may our stamina last!). We also get quite personal, sharing our Worst Case Scenarios (à la @nbcthisisus). We figured that if we faced our fears together, out loud, we could avoid being swallowed up by them. And you know what? It didn’t hurt. Yes, this episode is not all sunshine, rainbows and rose-tinted positivity. But it’s us, yo’ TGE gals, Sam and Charlene, at our most real and raw. And even during this time, we’re a fucking delight TBQH (just maybe a bit sensi at the mo). Wanna pull up a chair? You’ll also be happy to know that, in this episode, we take a short break from #CoronaHysteria to chat about the Bennie’s Book Fayre. Were you there? Did you love it? If you want to get caught up on what went down that day, #listentothelatest.

Episode 59: CORONAWHATNOW!?

We Attempt to Break Free From Hysteria

CHIN UP, CHEST OUT, MOTHERLOVERS 🖤 Guys, it's been a helluva week in more ways than one, and unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably felt a whole gamut of emotions surrounding Coronavirus. If you're anything like Charlene, you're relatively chill but wondering if you should be more afraid and/or vigilant. If you're anything like Sam, you want to go to sleep and wake up in 2021. You might even have categorised Corona has a Class 1 swearword in your house, which means you're probably thinking, "Not you guys too!" and have your finger hovering over the Unfollow button. Hear us out though... We're tired of the noise ya'll. Every T, D and H has had something to say about this fookin' pandemic and, honestly, our heads are spinning. So the point of this episode was twofold: 1. We wanted to confirm with one another that some people are wacking out unnecessarily (if that’s you, please can Sam have some toilet paper?). 2. We also wanted to look at straight up facts so that we could tackle this thing systematically, logically and without freaking the fuck out. If you also want things simplified, come sit in our boat and let’s talk. But, honestly, if you just want to drown out everything Corona-related and you're after some laughs, we don’t mind if you give this one a skip. There is plenty other TGE to go round. The link to Episode 59: CORONAWHATNOW? Breaking Free From Hysterics is in our bio.

Episode 58: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!

With Innov8 Play Founder Janine van Schalkwyk

#EACHFOREQUAL is the theme of this year's International Women's Day, and in this latest episode of The Great Equalizer, your hosts dive headfirst into what that means exactly for women today. We chat a bit about Girls! Girls Girls! Magazine's latest viral video and ponder what it means to be bringing up girls (and boys!) in the current narrative.

But what is International Women's Day for if not for celebrating women's achievement? And few women are worth celebrating more than our guest Janine van Schalkwyk, founder of Innov8 Play.

Innov8 Play's flagship product, the Barbie Dream Big boardgame has only been on the shelves (as in, EVERY retail shelf) for about five months now. And you'd think that that would be enough, right? Well you'd be wrong. Tune in to hear about this powerhouse mom-of-three's entrepreneurial journey and join us in saluting her for a JOB WELL DONE.

Episode 57: YOU HAVE 24 HOURS!

Whatcha Gonna Do With Them?

As moms, time is one of our most precious commodities. It’s simply something we can never have enough of, right?. Mostly we just want it to slow down, other times we want to duplicate it (or ourselves). So this week on The Great Equalizer, Sam and Charlene ponder the BS nonsense that is a Leap Day. In case you missed it, 29 February has come and gone, folks. A whole 24 extra hours this year. Did you feel it? No? Us neither. So basically, we spend this episode fantasising about what we would do if we were gifted 24 sweet, sweet hours. We’ve also set up some perfect-world parameters. Money? No probs. Kids? There if you want them, but well taken care of if you don’t. Sleep also isn’t an issue, unless you want it to be. Okay now… Are you ready? Care to indulge in some harmless fantasies with your TGE gals? Tune in now! P.S. In this episode we also answer a sex question from a listener and welcome more mail from you lovelies!

Episode 56: AM I THE ASSHOLE?

The Parenting Edition

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam takes a step back, Charlene has her own date with destiny and we play a little game of Am I The Asshole... the parenting edition. Here at TGE Headquarters we've been fascinated by the popular subReddit, Am I The Asshole (or AITA), which has a goldmine of parenting-related content. Look, we must be honest and admit that we had to educate ourselves about Reddit and subreddits (we're honestly not that cool), but the Internet is a wonderful thing, folks, and once AITA was on our radars we had to share it with our beautiful listeners. So join in the fun and play along. You decide... Am I The Asshole?

Episode 55: YOUR SEX LIFE, RELOADED!

with sexologist Dr Jireh Serfontein

This week on The Great Equalizer, Maintenance Night comes back in a big way as we chat to MD and sexologist Dr Jireh Serfontein.

In this episode we explore how our sexual tastes evolve as we get older and we unpack how couples can brave the most awkward and intimate conversations to get on the same sexual page 🍑🍆💦

We also take some questions from curious listeners and delve right in to threesomes, games, toys, fantasies, boundaries and (of course) comprehensive sex education.

DISCLAIMER: Your listening to this podcast is strictly consensual (but oh my will it be lotsa fun) 😉

Episode 54: FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS!

Celebrating Galentine’s Day

LADIES CELEBRATING LADIES! This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam has a date with destiny, Charlene’s deep in the forest, and we chat about female friendships (in the month of LUUUURVE) because this week it's GALENTINE'S DAY. What's Galentine's Day, you ask? It's only the best day of the year! Tune in now to #listentothelatest and to see why we at TGE believe in the power of female friendships. The link, as always, is in our bio. Have a great week, Motherlovers!

Episode 53: HOW TO GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!

With The UnPodcast’s Caitlyn de Beer

NO-ONE HAS THEIR SHIT TOGETHER Or do they...? On this week's episode of The Great Equalizer, we chat about what life would look like if we had our shit together, and why we keep striving to do all the things that would qualify us for having our shit together. Is it really possible to disembark from the Hot Mess Express and be put-together, organised and happy? Well, we don't effing know, obviously. So we brought in the big guns and called on The UnPodcast's Caitlyn de Beer for some sage advice. And then we kidnapped and shrank her so we could keep her in our pocket forever. You know, in case of emergency. The ransom is... You need to listen to this episode.

Episode 52: HINDSIGHT!

Is 2020

HINDSIGHT IS… 2020 This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam has a birthday (whoop whoop), Charlene has a handle on things (for now) and we discuss whether hindsight can really bring you insight when it comes to being a mom. The best thing about parenting is that you eventually become really good at it… Until your child levels up and the joke’s on you. They inevitably turn another year older, enter a fresh new transition and challenge you right from the start. And then BOOM. You know nothing again (or still). Surprise! Essentially, we’ve long come to realise that we never know what the f*ck we’re doing, which means the only clarity that hindsight offers parents is this: Nothing ever stays the same for very long, so best we all learn to ride the waves of uncertainty like the ragged queens we are. In the latest episode of The Great Equalizer, we (Joburg moms Sam Herbst and Charlene Armstrong) chat about how we’ll be parenting differently this year, taking into account all the lessons that came out of 2019. We also look into identity and our sense of selves, and how we plan to regain a semblance of our old (new?) self in 2020. Can we do it!? #Staytuned, folks.

Episode 51: WATER SAFETY!

WITH OLYMPIC SWIMMING LEGEND RYK NEETHLING

This week on The Great Equalizer… Sam needs some alone time, Charlene is tired of being bullied, and we talk WATER SAFETY with Olympic swimming legend and CEO of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, Ryk Neethling.

This episode is TGE’s last hurrah for 2019… And it’s a biggie.

As we all break away for the festive season and head to our respective holiday destinations (or staycations), Charlene and I thought it was important to educate ourselves (and you) about water safety.

As much as we want to put our heads in the sand and enjoy Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere, we couldn’t ignore some of the shocking statistics – locally and worldwide – when it comes to drowning and near-drowning incidents. So, we thought we’d talk about it.

* According to the World Health Organisation, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths.
* Young people between the ages of 1 and 20 are most likely to fall victim.
* A WHO report showed that drowning is one of the top five causes of death overall for people aged 1-14 years. And, in a developing country like South Africa, the problem is obviously a lot more aggravated.

Another thing that shocks us as moms is how many drowning incidents happen outside of big bodies of water – which are the usual suspects, right?

Where most people are concerned about pools and the sea, many forget about bathtubs, buckets, toilets, kiddie pools, and even puddles (considering all this rain we’ve had in SA this festive season).

A study published last year revealed that 70% of drownings in children under the age of four occur in or around the home.

So, we looked into solutions and preventative measures to avoid become a statistic. For instance, children should learn how to control their breathing, how to orientate themselves and how to extricate themselves from deep water. These should be basic life skills for all children.

But what do we know, right? Which is why we called on Olympic swimming legend and learn-to-swim advocate Ryk Neethling to chat water safety.

Episode 50: FESTIVE BURNOUT!

WHY WE LOVE TO HATE THE END OF THE YEAR

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam scares the bejesus out of her child (again), Charlene is done with birthday parties and we call a spade a spade. That's right, folks. We've had enough of December and we're calling BS on the festive season.

Can we all just admit that Christmas is hard and that the end of the year has us feeling like Luke Skywalker in the trash compactor (if you know, you know).

The Mother Load never feels heavier than during the festive season and we unpack why burnout is at an all-time high.

Episode 49: THE FOURTH TRIMESTER!

WITH NURTURE ONE’S JENNY SPIRO

Guys, your TGE hosts (Sam and Charlene) have been putting off this topic for a helluva long time. For us, the Fourth Trimester is equivalent to a big day of reckoning… That day you decide whether this shitshow was all worth it. This is when you reconsider your life goals and you wonder whether saving your money and travelling the world was a better decision than buckling down with your S.O. and birthing his demon spawn.

It’s a tough one, because looking at our toddlers now we definitely have those telltale #itsallworthit moments. But when you’re IN IT – clueless, hormonal, emotional and literally hallucinating from the sleep deprivation – it’s all just a little too much, isn’t it?

Because we’re obviously such pessimists about those lazy, hazy, crazy newborn days, we’ve called on an expert (who loves newborns) to give us some insight into dealing with those demon babes. We chat to paediatric occupational therapist and founder of Nurture One Jenny Spiro about the environmental and developmental needs of babies in their first few months earthside.

We also call on The New Normal’s Genevieve Putter to chat about the other side of the Fourth Trimester (the one none of us chat about) – caring for The Mom. Considering airlines tells moms in an emergency to sort themselves out first before applying an oxygen mask to their children, we think it’s pretty damn important to advocate for the mom in the fourth trimester (and not just for the babies).

What say you?

Episode 48: CHRISTMAS

WITH HONEST TOYS’ ROSA KRAUSS

FEAR NOT, FOLKS! This Christmas, TGE’s got your back.

If (like us) you’re pulling a lastminute.com on Christmas 2019, you’re gonna wanna listen to this week’s episode. Stay chill, calm your farm and pour yourself a gluhwein, guys, because we are NOT losing sleep over gifts this year.

In this week’s episode, we chat to Rosa Krauss, founder of Honest Toys, South Africa’s first eco-conscious online toy store. Rosa chats family Christmas gifts, open-ended toys and the perfect gifts for babies, toddlers and older kids. Think of this as your ethical Christmas gift guide, showcasing some local goods from the likes of Birnbaum Designs, Imibongo Kamakhulu, Imagine Play, Stumped Wooden Toys, Soul Play and Tamba Naturals.

Local is still lekker, ya’ll, and we’re loving the kids Christmas gift recommendations from Rosa. So much so, in fact, that we REALLY don’t want you to go to the Honest Toys website at www.honesttoys.co.za and we think you shouldn’t really have to check out all the rest of Rosa’s merch. Seriously though, don’t go there… Just keep scrolling the gram. You’ll spend all your money on beautiful, ethical, entertaining and educational toys for your kids. So honestly, rather don’t do it.

And DON’T use the discount code #christmaswithtge to get 10% off your order.

Episode 47: SOLO PARENTING!

FEATURING SAM’S ESTRANGED HUSBAND RAY

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam's potty mouth bites her in the ass, MAYDAY MAYDAY we're losing Charlene and... We chat SOLO PARENTING, putting Sam’s estranged husband @ray.herbst in the hotseat.

Because we’re a podcast that a) doesn’t man bash and b) hates to exclude anyone of any race, gender or creed, we decided to go behind enemy lines to include some more commentary from some of our favourite #raddads about their parenting experience. So Sam gives ol’ Ray the third degree about what it’s like to be the one who leaves their coparent to solo parent. Guys, it makes for some interesting listening! We figured that the more we give our partners a platform (away from all the bitching we do about them) the more we come to understand why they say what they say or do what they do.

Solo parenting is DIFFICULT. There are so many variables at play and the juggle IS REAL. Not only are you one pair of hands short in the house, but as your children get older you need to manage their emotional needs as they come to terms with daddy (or mommy!) being away. It’s tough (maybe tougher?) for the one who’s left behind, but have we considered what it’s like for the one who leaves? Listen to this episode to find out!

Episode 46: HEY! RU OK?!

WITH A STORY FROM A MOM WHO’S NOT OKAY

This week on The Great Equalizer, we ask… HEY? RU OK!? It’s been several weeks since THAT video of Meghan Markle (AKA, the Duchess of Sussex) went viral. If you’re one of the few who haven’t watched it – and you must – it’s honest-to-goodness the very reason we started The Great Equalizer. Here is one of the most privileged women in the world crumbling under the pressure of being a newlywed and a new mother in the spotlight and, shock horror, being honest about it.

We always say that @beyonce herself is someone’s snack bitch and that Jay Z probably had to have a sniff of Blue Ivy's baby butt at some point. Kids are the great equalizer, yo. And so, when Meggles opened up about not being okay, we couldn't help but stop and take note. Also, most poignantly, Meghan thanks the interviewer for asking her if she’s okay because that’s a question that no-one ever asks her. It even made us feel a bit sheepish for not asking the moms around us if they're actually okay.

That right there, folks, is the problem with the whole narrative around motherhood these days. So we decided to go ahead and ask YOU and each other. We also chat to TGE listener and resident free-range mom Janine about hitting rock bottom and not being okay. As The Lactation Therapist so aptly said, “Everyone wants to hold the baby, but who will hold the mother?” Well, we'll hold the mother and we’re here to hold you.

Friend, Listener... Are you okay? And, if not, do you know that that’s okay?

Episode 45: KIDLIT 2.0!

SHOWCASING OUR FAVE LOCAL FINDS FOR 2019

This week on The Great Equalizer... Sam goes to the principal's office, Charlene is the picture of patience and WORD NERDS UNITE AGAIN!

This year marked the 20th anniversary of Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo – one of the most iconic books of our generation and the start of several more gems that we’ve come to love. And if you’re not a Julia Donaldson fan, perhaps other old favourites – like Guess How Much I Love You?, On The Night You Were Born, Goodnight Moon and Where The Wild Things Are – may have made it to your bookshelf?

However, on The Great Equalizer, we’ve recognised some amazing authors right on our doorstep who ought to be celebrated as much as their international contemporaries. Their work showcases the best that our beautiful country has to offer with definite local flavour and popular landmarks in the mix. In this episode, not only do we discover some new works by old friends like Phillippa Morassi, Megan Andrews and Tina Scotford, but we also meet some new friends along the way.

We have been so pleased to make the acquaintance of Nicola Obertik's debut novel Imi's Sore Tooth, Karen le Grange's Little Safari Books, Kerryn Ponter's Angry Owl series, Refiloe Moahloli's How Many Ways Can You Say Hello?, Melanie Rosettenstein's Rosie's Travelling Takkies, Joy Husted's Once Upon a Bush School, and Karen Bishop's Charlie Eats a Rainbow. All these books made it to The Great Equalizer's bedtime reading list this year. Tune in to hear more about these fave local finds and tell us, what is your little one’s current favourite bedtime story? We wanna know what you’re reading!

Episode 44: WHAT IS UP WITH ESSENTIAL OILS!?

WITH ASHLEIGH MURFIN

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam and Charlene launch into the brave new world of ESSENTIAL OILS.

Guys, this oily business has become just another excuse for moms to find a way to disagree and to choose their side in the Great Mom War. Jokes abound and many, many memes are doing the rounds about the greeny-beaniness of essential oils. The assumption of those in the dark is that only “crunchy anti-vaxxers” delve into essential oils. Look, we’re staying FAAAAR away from that argument (#nojudgies), but guys… When you know better, you do better, right? AND NOW WE KNOW BETTER.

Scrap the bullshit labels and divisions and enter Ashleigh Murfin, founder of local small business Living That Oil Life. This power mom is a lover and a healer with the most amazing story. Pre-kid Ash faced some heavy shit in her later 20s and was forced to take a long, strong look at changing her lifestyle. This incredible woman has done her homework on essential oils and she knows her stuff. More than that, she’s developed her own range of blends, which are thebomb.com. We at The Great Equalizer have tried and tested her products and this stuff seriously works!

What’s more, Living That Oil LIfe products are not just for adults! Our little people can benefit from these natural oils too. Ash has something for nausea, rashy bums, eczema, teething and LOTS LOTS MORE. Aaaaaannnnddd there may or may not be a little libido range in the works. Basically, we are Here. For. It.

Folks, when you hit play on this episode, have the tissues on hand. Ash’s journey to holistic wellness was a rocky one (to put it lightly). But you know what? No diamond was ever made without a mountain of pressure.

Episode 43: I’M A PERSON TOO!

WITH KNITTED KNOCKERS SA FOUNDER DANA BIDDLE

“My kids come first, but don't think for a second that means I come last. I may be a mother and my responsibilities may be great but, by God, I'll have my nachos and margaritas while watching Dateline if it's the last thing I do.” – Mouthy Moms Club.

Clearly it’s not just us at The Great Equalizer who are taking a stand against not mattering anymore. WE ARE PEOPLE TOO, FFS! We get hungry and tired and scared and gatvol and our feelings get hurt when those little people forget that we’re more than just a mom.

So in the latest episode of The Great Equalizer we revisit self care and we give ourselves permission to prioritise us. After all, we’re no good to our children or our spouses if we break, so we’re making sure we do what we need to do to keep ticking.

Guys, we’re looking around at the women (or just people!) around us and we’re realising that everyone’s feeling a little broken right now (perhaps it’s simply that time of the year). So whatever you’re currently, we see you. We salute you. You are doing a good job (and good is good enough, friend).

We hope that in listening to this episode you feel a little less alone.

Episode 42: PERFECT(ISH) PARENTING

WITH PARENTY EDITORS LEIGH TAYLER & JACQUI BESTER

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam scars her child forever, Charlene is feeling surprisingly in control of her life PLUS! Parenty editors Leigh Tayler and Jacqui Bester are IN THE HOUSE to chat perfect(ish) parenting. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome two new clowns to our crazy circus. In fact, we liked them so much we tied them up and put them in our trommel with the rest of our monkeys. So in case anyone has missed Leigh or Jacqui this past week… We’re keeping them. Thanks 🤡

Guys, this episode was made with love for all parents, but especially those who are having a moment. If you feel like you’ve dropped the ball (or several balls), if you’re drowning in high expectations (mostly from yourself), if you’re sort of feeling kind of like a parent but you’re not so sure anymore…

We see you. We salute you. And we think you should listen to this episode 😎

Leigh and Jacqui fill us in on how and why the Parenty platform came to be. They also tell us more about how to fail at being the perfect parent, reminding us that your best is still good enough. So stop trying so damn hard!

Episode 41: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS NOW WE’RE IN THE WORLD

OKAY, HANDS UP 🙌🏼 Who’s grateful for this podcast? Well, we are 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ ☀️ Folks, this week’s episode marks our first trip around the sun. We take a trip down memory lane and hark back to episodes passed. Please tune in and join the nostalgia! Honestly, guys, it feels like we’ve birthed another baby and made it through the first year💪🏼 Someone tell us we've done a good job! This podcast has brought us many, many tears, but many more laughs in between. While the first year has been tough, it’s obviously also been a ton of fun and even cathartic to hook up with a great girlfriend once a week. We debrief about life, love and everything in between and its actually therapeutic and a privilege to focus on our feelings for one hour in a week.

That said, we’ve been through a lot of heartache and a lot life lessons these past twelve months and we can only hope that you, our listener, has been on this journey with us. Through the heartache and the joy, what matters to us most is that we’ve always got a third host in the mix… YOU. So cheers to us 🥂 but also, cheers to you guys 👊🏼 We wouldn’t be here without you (or our kids, obvi).

Episode 40: SPANKING!

WITH A SPLASH OF MOM SHAME

This week on The Great Equalizer, we talk SPANKING (with a splash of mom shame). The recent Constitutional Court ruling that outlaws the “reasonable and moderate chastisement of children” has us feeling all the feels. In a society as violent as ours… Well, we get it. It all makes sense. But are we the only ones feeling a little desperate about discipline now? Like someone took the sharpener out of our Space Case? Are we the only ones confused and overwhelmed by contradictory information about how to handle our kids when they turn into the demon spawn of Satan? Is anyone else feeling judged by perfect(er) parents and the Powers that Be? Just us?

Look, we’re not here to argue with the ruling, or come up in defence of hitting our children. Honestly, we agree that telling our kids hitting is bad but then hitting them when they do something wrong doesn’t make a whole lotta sense. But when we'd exhausted all our options discipline-wise, that was always a last resort. And we no longer have it available to us. We’re down for debate, guys. At the end of the day, none of us wakes in the morning determined to fuck our kids up. What are your thoughts on the matter? #nojudgies

Episode 39: LET’S ALL LEARN FROM LUKE!

WITH JESS ROBERTS

This week on The Great Equalizer, we chat to Learning from Luke’s Jess Roberts about raising a child born with special needs. Jess takes us back to the moment she heard the news that her unborn baby boy, Luke, would be born with Down Syndrome. We also chat about her decision to have a second child after Luke, as well as what’s next for the Roberts family.

Guys, THIS EPISODE IS IMPORTANT. It’s important for parents of “normal” children who’ve never been exposed to someone born with Down Syndrome and It’s equally important for parents of a child born with special needs. Moreover, if Down Syndrome is something you fear, worry about or don’t understand, this one’s for you.

Honestly, we could all stand to learn a lot more from Luke (and Jess, John and baby sister Holly).

Episode 38: Future-Proof Your Child

WITH NIKKI BUSH

This week we talk future-proofing your child with human potential and parenting expert Nikki Bush. Every child will ask their parent what they think they should be when they grow up. Are you ready with an answer? If you just mouthed “Fuck no!” then we’re right there with you. We don’t even know what we wanna be when we grow up! Luckily, Nikki Bush knows a thing or two about parenting AND the future – and she’s written a book about it to help a sister out. Quite honestly, guys, talking to Nikki made us feel a lot less anxious about our kids’ future. You want to read this book! But also… You want to listen to this episode!

Bonus Episode: ENOUGH!

WITH THE NEW NORMAL’S GENEVIEVE PUTTER

This week on the Great Equalizer, Sam flies solo at the end of #hellweek in South Africa. Luckily, post-partum doula and founder of The New Normal Genevieve Putter swoops in to relieve Sam from 60 minutes of monologuing.

It truly was a week from hell. For those of you living in South Africa, you’ll know that life around us – in some places literally – went up in smoke. A lot happened all at once in terms of gender-based violence, on top of a public kidnapping and xenophobic riots. If we weren’t angry we were sad, depressed, anxious, fearful. It was all just a little too much. This was a big topic to tackle, but necessary. Sam and Gen discuss the week’s events, acknowledging their feelings and fears as women, as moms and as South Africans. They also consider what’s next for South Africa.

Episode 37: CLOTH NAPPIES

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH ALL THAT POO?

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam is chilled like a lemon, Charlene is ready for some nuptials and the duo pull their heads out of the sand and talk Modern Cloth Nappies with South African Cloth Nappy Users founder Catherine Dowie. STRIKE A WOMAN, STRIKE A ROCK

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam's faith in humanity is restored, Charlene takes her weekends back, and Sam argues with Charlene about Women's Day. This episode seeks to honour all the brave South African women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August, 1956. Those who protested the Apartheid regime with the utmost grace, dignity, discipline, courage and humility. Bad language aside, these are all virtues we strive to emulate here on TGE.

Episode 35: TANTRUMS!

WITH PHILLIPPA MORASSI

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam’s about to get fit AF, Charlene is captain of her ship and we talk TEMPER TANTRUMS. PLUS! We welcome back children's counsellor Phillippa Morassi. Now, we all know that it's age-appropriate for toddlers to lose their shit. Maybe you gave them the wrong coloured sippy cup, maybe they can't find the yellow teddy bear they don't actually own, maybe they want the sandwich they rejected ten seconds before crying about wanting the sandwich, maybe they don't want you to look at them. Or breathe. Yes, tantrums are developmental and "this too shall pass" but, firstly, what do you do when you can see the tantrum on the horizon? What do you do to prevent it from being a full-on meltdown? How do you know when the run-of-the-mill tantrum has crossed the line into Satan's territory? How do you know when it's time to get help from a professional? All this and more on this episode of The Great Equalizer.

Episode 34: FIRST FOODS!

WITH SARAH BOOYENS

Folks, we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE’RE DOING. But in this episode we acknowledge that the best guidance we ever got about weaning our babies and starting them on solids was(solicited) advice from other mothers. So Sam and Charlene go back to their own weaning experiences, filling listeners in on what worked for them, what didn’t and what they’d do differently if they had to do it all over again. And because she’s IN IT and just published a brand-spanking new blog post on the topic, we also chat to the ever-fabulous girl mom of two @mascara_and_mimosas, who fills us in about her weaning journey, as well as some products that she currently can’t live without..

Episode 33: THE MOTHER LOAD!

WITH RACHEL KOLISI

On this episode of The Great Equalizer, we chat to South Africa’s version of a first lady Rachel Kolisi and we pinpoint exactly why modern moms are so damn tired... Harper's Bazaar dubbs it Emotional Labour and we call it The Mother Load. It's doing 'all the things'. It's finding a way to balance date night and quality time with each child while making sure the fridge is stocked, school fees are paid and there's water in the cat's bowl (let's also not forget about our actual day jobs). It's fighting age-old ingrained inequality but learning to do so without hurting an engaged father's feelings. It's all that, and so much more.

AND AUNTIES & UNCLES

This week on The Great Equalizer, Sam is missing her #1, Charlene is going through the motions and we talk aunties, uncles and that proverbial village that raises our kids. While the TGE ladies would like to think that we have this raising kids thing waxed (*choke*), we have to admit that we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our people, our tribe, the village around us that gives the right kind of support exactly when we need it. So in this episode we talk about the super subs – our close friends, brothers, sisters, BILS and SILS. Ag, you guys… We heart you big time. Thanks for loving our kids as if they’re your own. Thanks for recognising when we’re about to crack and showing up exactly when we need it.

Episode 30: SLEEP!

WITH GOOD NIGHT MD JOLANDI BECKER

When it comes to parenting, is there any commodity more precious than sleep? This week on The Great Equalizer, we unpack this foreign concept – the unattainable dream of getting enough zees, assuming your child does the same. At the end of the day, a scale cannot measure beauty, talent, purpose, life force, strength or love. You are far more than a fucking number on a scale and you deserve to feel as fabulous as we know you are.

Episode 25: DIVERSE FAMILIES

WITH DR ELNA RUDOLPH

As cookie-cutter suburban moms, we at The Great Equalizer are hyper aware of the need to be more inclusive. Our reasoning? If inclusivity doesn’t start with us, how can we expect our kids to be kind and accepting individuals. Taking it a step further, what if our kids are the different ones? What if our boys are gay? What if our daughters are transgender? We want to be raising them in a world that accepts whoever they’ll come to be. So it starts with us.
